HISTORY
The school was founded on
October 5, 1945 with the name, National Business School. Courses offered
were Typewriting, Stenography and Bookkeeping. The School site was at
Solis Street, Iloilo City.
In school year 1949 - 1950
when it transferred to its new site at E. Lopez Street, Jaro, Iloilo
City far from city proper, the name of the school was changed to Cabalum
Commercial School (CCS) to meet the requirement imposed by the Bureau
of Private School under the leadership of Dr. Daniel Salcedo to acquire
government recognition for all courses offered.
The school offered first to
fourth year secondary commercial course with laudable record in the
government examination. It was the first to offer the said type of
curriculum in the Island of Panay. In the 1962 National Examination for
Vocational - Secondary School, for both public and private schools, the
Cabalum Commercial School ranked third place in the entire Philippines.
Due to public demand, in
school year 1951 - 1952 the school offered a one-year collegiate
secretarial course for which government recognition was acquired the
following year. After a couple of years, the school offered first and
second year commerce for which government recognition was likewise
acquired later. At present, all these courses are offered by the school,
except the secondary commercial courses, which was discontinued at the
end of 1961 to 1962 when the school transferred to the present site at
Iznart Street, Iloilo City.
After the destruction of
its building by the February 1966 fire, CCS with all its determination, constructed from the ashes a new building and in the process accommodated
the increasing enrollment.
On June 15, 1973, a
government permit and authorize to operate the school branch in San
Miguel, Jordan, Province of Guimaras, was secured under the name of
Guimaras Vocational School (GVS). A two-hectare lot was bought by the
main school. This was an attempt to reach and help develop the new
flourishing community of the locale with its own new provincial capitol
where the school branch is located. This answered the demand of the
community in tis employment needs.
In 1979 - 1980, two new
courses were added, namely: Dressmaking and Pre-Master Men's Tailoring.
CCS has been offering scholarship to deserving students who cannot
afford to continue their studies on account of financial problems. Many
of those who were recipients of this charitable offer are now employed in
various parts of the country not to mention those who engage in
business using the knowledge that they learned from the school.
The undeniable exemplary
leadership of Dr. Jose D. Cabalum, Sr. in his pursuit for academic
excellence and effective implementation of all educational programs,
convince the regional committee on education to confer to the founder,
an award of "Outstanding Performance in School Administration". CCS has
served the public continuously for sixty-seven (67) years by helping
many ambitious youths acquire necessary training and skill for
employment. Since its foundation, the school has been serving honestly
with primordial aim and dedicated to service. Because of her desire to
specialize in collegiate secretarial course and business education, in
January 1982, Cabalum Commercial School applied to the Ministry of
Education, Culture and Sports to offer complete Bachelor of Science in
Business Administration (BSBA). The permit was issued on OCtober 1984 and
become effective on March 1985. The request for change of her name was
also granted, and the corporate name was changed to "CABALUM WESTERN
COLLEGE".
In order to keep pace with
the demand of technological advancement and development, Cabalum Western
College offered Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, starting
school year 1992. Likewise, it added in Bachelor of Science in
Secretarial Administration major in Computer Teacher Education and
Secretarial Teacher Education, while under the Bachelor of Science in
Business Administration Course new additional majors were introduced aside
from Management. It now offers major Data Processing and major in
Finance and Management Accounting. In 1996, the school offer a five-year
program in Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Last June 2009 a permit
to offer a course in Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BSHRM) was granted by the Commission on Higher Education.
Cabalum Western College is an academic institution that had encountered
significant transition since its humble beginning. The school continues
to exist embodying its three ideals" "Scholarship, Character and
Service".
